A satellite identifies tank tracks in the dirt, and a mall security camera catches the moment a bomb in Gaza detonates. While journalists' access to the war in Gaza is limited, a flood of video from all sorts of sources documents what is — and isn't — going on. That means combing through an endless supply of video posted on sources like X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, Instagram, Telegram and Facebook. Sometimes images from video games are passed off as real, but experts can usually spot them. Satellite images, video and photos helped The Washington Post track where Israeli forces went during their initial incursion into Gaza.

According to the Australian Marine Conservation Society, the noise can reach 250 decibels, around a million times “more intense” than the loudest whale sounds. “So, a deaf whale is a dead whale.”Environmental campaigners say Australia should be making greater efforts to reduce its emissions, not build new fossil fuel projects. Campaigners say the projected emissions made a mockery of Australia’s stated commitment to reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. “Scarborough is a part of the Burrup Hub, and that is Australia’s largest fossil fuel project. If it goes ahead we’re looking at emissions equivalent to 12 years of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions,” said Greenpeace’s Richard George.

7 Books for Better Sleep

A good night’s sleep has become increasingly elusive for many of us — as we stay up for work, play or existential dread — and this is to our detriment. Not only do we feel the effects of poor sleep throughout the day, but research shows that chronic sleep loss has negative long-term effects on our heart health, brain function and more. If you’re struggling with shut-eye, or you’re simply sleep-curious, reading a book is a solid place to start. (She also noted that you should reach out to your doctor if you’re worried about sleep.) To help you begin, we asked sleep scientists, clinicians and researchers for their favorite recommendations.

Why TV news executives are having a brutal year in 2023
  + stars: | 2023-08-14 | by ( Oliver Darcy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
In his place, CBS announced Monday that Wendy McMahon will be chief executive and president of CBS News, the network’s local stations, and CBS Media Ventures. The formidable task is reflective of the extraordinary challenges traditional media outlets are facing amid a period of rapid and existential change to their business models and advertising woes. Increasingly, there is no longer a single powerful media executive tasked with solving for the less-than-ideal set of circumstances. The industry veteran noted that there is less of a focus on making splashy — perhaps at times risky — moves to build for the future among the C-suite ranks. Instead, there is a mounting emphasis on slashing costs to best position the mammoth media companies for the inevitable decline of linear television.

During his tenure, Khemlani bolstered CBS News’ reporting ranks, luring prominent journalists such as Robert Costa and Cecilia Vega to the outlet. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Friday that Esther Wang, 16, was healthy, happy and reunited with her family after getting lost in Golden Ears Park. Authorities reported that the teen lost her way along the park’s East Canyon trail Tuesday afternoon and her hiking group and its leader were unable to find her. That's terrible advice, says bestselling author James Clear: Instead, you need to find 100 role models. In that previous performance, Carlile had often guided Mitchell or taken on lead vocal duties herself. But at the Gorge, Mitchell was once again in control. LONDON, Nov 6 (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is standing by a government minister who has been accused of bullying a colleague, cabinet office minister Oliver Dowden said on Sunday, saying the phone messages in question were sent "in the heat of the moment". I think he now accepts that he shouldn't have done it and he regrets doing so," Dowden told Sky News. "He shouldn't have sent those messages ... But of course the prime minister continues to have confidence in Gavin Williamson." Since being appointed as Britain's third prime minister in two months almost two weeks ago, Sunak has come under pressure for his government appointments, particularly Braverman's reappointment as interior minister.

A CBS executive shot down speculation, saying: "No one on that list is moving forward into an anchor job here, and Bill Whitaker already has one of the best anchor jobs in the business."
